How to write an investor update founders actually send
A repeatable structure for monthly investor updates — metrics, wins, misses, asks — plus what to include, what to cut, and how to keep sending them.
The best investor update is the one that gets sent. Consistency beats polish: a plain five-section email every month builds more trust than a beautiful deck every other quarter.
What should an investor update include?
A monthly investor update should include five things: headline metrics with the prior period for comparison, what shipped, what missed and why, the specific asks you need help with, and cash position with runway. Anything beyond those five sections is optional.
The structure
- 01TL;DR — three sentences. If the reader stops here, they should still know how you are doing.
- 02Metrics — revenue, growth, retention, pipeline. Same metrics, same order, every month.
- 03Shipped — what changed for customers, not what changed in the codebase.
- 04Misses and learnings — name them yourself before someone asks.
- 05Asks — named intros, hiring referrals, specific advice. Vague asks get vague help.
- 06Cash and runway — closing balance, burn, months remaining.
What to cut
- Long narrative preambles. Investors skim; lead with numbers.
- New metrics invented to look good this month. Changing the scoreboard reads as a miss.
- Screenshots without a sentence explaining why they matter.
How do you keep sending updates every month?
Remove the writing tax. Track the metrics as you go rather than reconstructing them the night before, keep the recipient list in one place instead of your sent folder, and reuse the same template so the update becomes fill-in-the-blanks. If you can queue it to send on a schedule, do that — the deadline does the discipline for you.
Investors forget good months. They remember founders who reported honestly during bad ones.
In Founder Productivity, updates draft themselves from the metrics already in your workspace, you pick a template before saving, and monthly or quarterly sends can be queued to a chosen recipient list automatically.
